CANADA EMERGENCY STUDENT BENEFIT (CESB)

The application process for the emergency student benefit is up and running.

The benefit is for students who do not otherwise qualify for the CERB or EI. From May to August 2020, the CESB will provide payments to eligible students of $1,250 for each 4-week period, or $2,000 for each 4-week period for students with dependents or a disability.

On May 1, 2020, the government passed legislation to establish the CESB, which will provide income support to post-secondary students who have lost work opportunities due to COVID-19.

Students who are not receiving the CERB may be eligible to receive $1,250 per month for up to four months (May-August 2020).  Eligible students with disabilities and eligible students with dependents will receive an additional $750 per month. The CESB will be available to:

  1. Students who are enrolled in a post-secondary education program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate; 

  2. Students who ended their studies or graduated no earlier than December 2019;

  3. High school graduates who have applied for, and will be joining, post-secondary programs in the coming months; and 

  4. Canadian students studying abroad meeting one of the above criteria.
